Cast Iron 101

Step by step care for your AFC cast iron skillet

How to Care for Your Skillet

Your AFC cast iron skillet is one of the most versatile cooking items you can own. It can be used to cook virtually anything. From over the fire to inside the oven, stovetop, or on a gas grill. AFC skillets can take the heat! The truth is, a cast iron skillet is not hard to maintain, if properly cared for it will last a lifetime and then some!

How to Clean Your
Cast Iron Skillet

Step 1: After cooking, when your skillet is cool enough to handle, simply wash with hot water.  We strongly recommend the use of a stainless steel chain mail scrubber. Step 2: Once clean, thoroughly dry your skillet with a paper towel. Step 3: Good practice is to then wipe a very thin coating of our proprietary cast iron seasoning and conditioning wax over the interior of the skillet with a paper towel to keep it conditioned and ready for the next use. Step 4: The very best seasoning a cast iron skillet will achieve is with repeated use.  Each time you cook with your skillet, you will introduce a very thin layer of seasoning.

How to Season Your
Cast Iron Skillet

All Austin Foundry Cookware comes pre-seasoned and is ready for immediate use. For further seasoning, these are our recommendations.

Step 1: Preheat oven to 200°F.

Step 2: Wash your skillet with hot water and soap. Then dry your skillet with a paper towel.

Step 3: Place your skillet upside down on the middle rack of preheated oven for approximately 10 minutes.

Step 4: Using oven mitts, carefully remove your skillet from the oven and place on a heat proof surface.

Step 5: Raise the oven temperature to 500°F.

Step 6: With a clean paper towel or lint free cloth, wipe all surfaces of the skillet with a thin layer of our proprietary cast iron seasoning and conditioning wax. After the wax has been applied to all surfaces of the skillet, wipe the entire skillet with a clean paper towel or lint free cloth.

Step 7: Return the skillet to the 500°F oven, upside down on the middle rack for one hour.

Step 8: After one hour, turn the oven off and allow the skillet to cool until it can be safely handled. Repeat this process as many times as you would like.
